I have read somewhere (in my system), that it would be desirable to install glib-networking.

# guix package -i glib-networking

When it has done, I though about the updates:

# guix pull
# guix package -u

from the GNOME session:

$ guix pull
$ guix package -u

All these things go nicely enough.

To listen the radio with mplayer:

$ mplayer

Time to install Markdown...

$ guix package -i markdown

March 27th, 2018

# guix pull
# guix package -u
$ guix pull
$ guix package -u

Several hours after, the update is done... Without the slightest mistake :-)

I'd like to have the Mate desktop:

# vim /etc/config.scm
;; This is an operating system configuration template
;; for a full "desktop" setup with gnome, mate and xfce
;; environments.

(use-modules (gnu) (gnu system nss))
(use-service-modules desktop networking ssh)
(use-package-modules certs gnome mate screen ssh)

Adding mate-desktop-service:

;; Add GNOME, Mate and/or Xfce---we can choose at the log-in
  ;; screen with F1.
  (services (cons* (gnome-desktop-service)
		   (console-keymap-service "fr")
# guix system reconfigure /etc/config.scm
# reboot

F1 - Mate :-)

$ guix package -i glibc-locales

I don't remember if it's a good enough practice to install it from the user account...

$ export GUIX_LOCPATH=$HOME/.guix-profile/lib/locale

I've saw these commands on the mailing list or on the IRC...

Remove unusuable packages:

# guix gc

A conversion from mkv to mp4:

$ ffmpeg -i simplescreenrecorder-2018-04-06_09.12.24.mkv -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec libx264 our-final-product.mp4

April 22th, 2018

# guix pull
# guix package -u
$ guix pull
$ guix package -u

(While I was expecting a long period of updating, it did not last that long).

Yesterday, I understood that one could reconfigure the system without having to modify 'config.scm' :)

# guix system reconfigure /etc/config.scm

Software update downloads are taking place and the entire reconfiguration is running smoothly, all in about 3/4 of an hour.

Reboot on the 4.16.3 linux-libre kernel.

This is the first time in my life that I am dealing with such an impressive system of stability and coherence. After all these years under ubuntu and others, it really makes me feel good!

To be continued...
